CENTURIONS MARCH INTO COLNEY HEATH
by
Mike Walling
A new club has gradually been establishing itself in Colney Heath over the last twelve months. After a rather nomadic existence, St. Albans Centurions Rugby League Club has found a new base at the Recreation Ground and for the first time since 1996, when the club was founded, we really do feel at home. So we’d like to extend a big 'Thank You' to everyone in Colney Heath for making us feel so welcome and hope that we can make you feel just as welcome when you visit us to watch us play or come along to play yourself.
We really do want to be involved in village life and that’s why we had a stall and made hot dogs and hamburgers during last summer’s excellent Village Day. Our Australian 'Coach of the Year', Shane Rampling, is a regular visitor to Colney Heath Junior School and the boys and girls certainly seem to be enjoying their Rugby League. They’re also doing very well at it, winning local tournaments and playing the game with great enthusiasm.
In 2007, the Centurions had an excellent year, winning every home match and finishing the season as Southern Premier League Champions and Grand Final winners. We ended up playing Coventry in the National Grand Final and won the match 28 - 20. So this season, which runs from March to September, we’ve got a lot to live up to. But I hope it isn’t too immodest to say that we’re going to be well worth watching.
Because of our success we were delighted to be invited to take part in the prestigious Rugby League Challenge Cup. By the time you read this, the draw for the first round will already have taken place and we could be on the road to Wembley. Of course, St. Albans Centurions have got as much chance of winning the RL Cup as St. Albans City have of winning the FA Cup but it’s not about that, is it? It’s about the romance and the fun and the simple enjoyment of a day in the limelight against a bigger team.
We’d love to see you down at the Recreation Ground. If you want to know more about us, please visit our website www.sacenturions.co.uk <http://www.sacenturions.co.uk> where you’ll find up to date details of forthcoming fixtures and events, latest news from the club, contact details and a host of other goodies.
We look forward to meeting you all.
