ST ALBANS HOLD JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE FESTIVAL
Junior Rugby League teams from across the country converged on St Albans on Sunday for the annual Junior Rugby League Challenge Cup Weekend Rugby Festival. The professional Super League teams had their day at Wembley on Saturday, when the Warrington Wolves defeated the Leeds Rhinos in front of a sell out crowd, and a number of junior clubs who attended that game extended their stay in London to take part in the St Albans festival the following day.
The competition was in three age groups, Under 12's, Under 14's and Under 16's. All the teams played against each other in their age groups in a 15 minute each way 'tries only' competition, with the top two teams from each group playing in the finals. The event was organised by St Albans stalwarts Tony Bottomley and Shane Rampling, who said " It's been a great day, teams from as far apart at Lancashire and Suffolk coming together at St Albans to play junior Rugby League. We just hoped for good weather for the event as we had the Army and other stalls there to keep the teams supporters occupied in between games.
Fortunately the rain stayed away and a great day was had by all."

Centurions progress to Southern Grand Final
St Albans Centurions 60 -V- 6 Eastern Rhinos
The Centurions were caught cold when from the kick off Nick Woolley knock on and from the result set Pete Lamarrquand kicked through and the bounce beat the Cents defence and prop Brendan Cook dived on the loose ball. This was converted by Lamarquand. So after 3 minutes the Cents were 6 points down.
But then after 10 minutes the Cents opened their account when second row Adam Kambouris scored out wide. This was after Adam Kal high kick was dropped by full back Rodney Arbon. On the restart the Rhinos were penalised for an high tackle. From the tap two good drives by the Cents forwards and on the fourth tackle acting half Shane Rampling went blind and sent centre Aaron Brown in for a try David Kramer converted. Then the Cents forwards took command and the Rhinos had no answer to their strong running and another kick through by Adam Kal caught the Rhinos defence slow to re-act and winger Nick Woolley scored in the corner and David Kramer converted. Straight back from the kick off the Cents were back on the score sheet when full back David Kramer caught the Rhinos defence asleep and raced 60 metres to score and he converted his own try. The Cents defence was awesome and just before the half time whistle David Coyle raced onto a flat pass and burst through the Rhinos defence to score. David Kramer converted. Giving the Cents a 28 - 6 half time lead.
